🤖 Robots Enter The Ring

EngineAI staged the world's first freestyle humanoid robot fighting tournament, turning competitive combat into a testing ground for next-generation humanoid robots.

The Shift:

World's First Tournament - EngineAI hosted the inaugural Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL) in Shenzhen, where 32 global teams competed using the company's 1.73-meter, 75kg T800 humanoid robot.

Robot Fought Headless - The event's biggest moment came when one robot lost its head during a fight but continued throwing punches using its torso-based systems until a damaged cable eventually stopped it.

Beyond Knockouts - Robots were scored on effective strikes, body stability, defensive and evasive ability, and durability, making the competition a broader test of real-world robotic performance rather than just combat outcomes.

Training Through Combat - EngineAI says the tournament is designed to collect real combat data that improves mechanical balance, millisecond-level decision-making, and sensor coordination.

Robot competitions are becoming more than entertainment. By exposing humanoids to repeated real-world impacts and unpredictable situations, companies can accelerate development of the hardware and software needed for industrial and commercial robots.

🤖 New York School Gets A Robot Teacher

A New York school district will introduce a humanoid robot into classrooms this fall, marking one of the first real-world deployments of an AI-powered teaching assistant in U.S. schools.

The Shift:

Robot Joins Classroom - The Salamanca City Central School District will deploy Sally, a $57,590 humanoid robot from Realbotix, alongside an AI teaching assistant platform for students in AI and robotics courses.

Supporting Teachers - School officials say Sally is designed to assist rather than replace educators, with students interacting through both the physical robot and an AI avatar using a STEM curriculum developed by Steve Wozniak.

Community Concerns - The announcement has sparked debate over AI in education, with parents questioning privacy, the role of AI in classrooms, and whether expensive humanoid robots provide meaningful benefits over existing digital tools.

Company Under Scrutiny - The rollout has attracted additional attention because Realbotix's parent company also owns Abyss Creations, the maker of RealDoll, a sex doll, leading to wider discussions about corporate ownership, AI ethics, and the companies supplying technology to schools.

Schools are beginning to experiment with embodied AI instead of chatbots alone. As humanoid robots enter classrooms, the debate is expanding beyond teaching capabilities to include privacy, ethics, cost, and the long-term role of AI in education.

🧠 Brain Signals Now Control Robots

BrainCo introduced a new brain-computer interface platform that enables people to control robots using only their thoughts, without implants, voice commands, or physical gestures.

The Shift:

Thought-Controlled Robots - BrainCo demonstrated users controlling a robotic arm, humanoid robot, and robot dog through brain signals alone, including tasks like grasping a cup and picking up an apple.

AI Decodes Intent - The platform uses a non-invasive EEG headset to capture brain activity, while AI interprets the user's intent and sends commands to robots in approximately 200 milliseconds.

No Brain Implant - Unlike Neuralink's implanted chips, BrainCo's system works without surgery and supports third-party robots, making it easier to deploy across different robotic platforms.

Training Better Robots - The company also unveiled a brain-data collection kit that records both human task demonstrations and corresponding brain signals, creating intent-based datasets to improve robot training.

Brain-computer interfaces are expanding beyond medical applications into robotics. By translating thoughts into actions without implants, BrainCo is exploring a more accessible way for humans to interact with and train intelligent machines.

🤖 Samsung expects tangible humanoid robotics progress this year, exploring acquisitions and partnerships while balancing major technology investments with strong profits and a massive semiconductor manufacturing expansion in South Korea. 

🤖 Agility Robotics is opening a 60,000-square-foot software hub in Fremont, hiring nearly 200 engineers and AI specialists as the Oregon-born Digit maker rapidly expands closer to Silicon Valley’s talent ecosystem. 

🤖 Lumo-2 upgrades robot learning with latent predictive reasoning, progressive cross-modal alignment, and scalable multi-source training, improving inference efficiency, long-horizon manipulation, dexterity, and generalization beyond dedicated robot demonstrations across real-world tasks. 

 💰 Blackstone invested in South Korean actuator maker Futronic, valuing it near $676 million, while founder Jin-ho Ko remains CEO to accelerate global growth across automotive and industrial robotics markets. 

🚀 SpaceX will launch Northrop Grumman’s two-armed Mission Robotic Vehicle, designed to repair and service satellites in orbit, aboard a Falcon 9 headed toward geosynchronous transfer orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

🤖 Samsung and Hyundai are jointly developing a four-legged military robot for South Korea’s army, expanding their physical AI partnership ahead of the robot dog’s planned deployment later this year nationwide.
