🤖 1X Unveils Human-Like Robot Hands

Robotics startup 1X introduced new 25-degree-of-freedom hands for its NEO humanoid robot, designed to bring near-human dexterity, tactile sensing, and force control to real-world tasks.

The Shift:

Human-Like Hands - NEO's 25-DoF tendon-driven hands combine human-like dexterity with tactile sensing, enabling delicate tasks including tool use, sign language, fruit picking, and precise object handling.

Built To Feel - Every joint is force-sensitive and fully backdrivable, while tactile skin detects pressure and slip, allowing NEO to sense, adjust, and manipulate objects in real time.

Ready For Work - The hands are IP68 waterproof, food-safe, and tested for millions of cycles, supporting continuous operation, safe human interaction, and both delicate and heavy-duty manipulation.

Scaling Production - 1X says every NEO will ship with these hands, with dedicated manufacturing now capable of producing up to 10,000 hands annually for broader deployment. You can watch the hands in action here.

🤖 Mistral Enters Robotics AI

French AI startup Mistral launched Robostral Navigate, its first robotics model, expanding beyond language models into physical AI for factories, warehouses, and industrial automation.

The Shift:

Robotics Debut - Robostral Navigate is Mistral's first robotics-focused AI model, built to power navigation and automation tasks across industrial environments.

The model is designed to work with robots from multiple hardware manufacturers instead of being tied to a single robotics platform.

Physical AI Push - The launch follows Mistral's acquisition of Austrian robotics startup Emmi AI in May, strengthening its expansion into robotics and automation.

With Robostral Navigate, Mistral joins companies including Nvidia and Google DeepMind in developing AI models designed for real-world robotic systems.

Robotics is emerging as the next frontier for AI companies. Mistral's move into physical AI signals that competition is expanding beyond chatbots into models designed to operate machines in real-world environments.

🎈 Soft Floating Robot Takes Flight

Researchers developed a helium-filled soft robot with flapping wings, with CNET reporting that its gentle design prompted people to instinctively hug, pat, and hold it close during testing.

The Shift:

Built For Comfort - The balloon-like robot floats quietly using flapping wings, with early tests showing people naturally hugged, patted, and held it close during interactions.

Home Companion - Researchers envision it serving as an aerial companion, helping with reminders, gentle wake-up calls, or encouraging movement after long periods of sitting.

Soft By Design - Its lightweight body, compliant materials, and absence of exposed rotors are intended to make interactions feel safer and more approachable than conventional flying robots.

Practical Limits - Limited battery life and payload capacity mean future versions may require ultralight hardware or offboard AI and sensing before wider real-world deployment.

Most home robots focus on functionality, while this research explores emotional interaction. Soft, lightweight flying robots could open a different direction for companion robotics if current hardware limitations can be overcome.

🤖 Quick Shifts

🤖 MIT researchers have developed a bird-inspired robot that can both fly and swim, using wing movements modeled on diving seabirds like puffins to seamlessly transition between air and water for tasks such as marine monitoring and environmental research. 

🪳 Researchers have created a tiny 'scuba suit' for cyborg cockroaches, enabling them to survive underwater and in low-oxygen environments for up to three hours, with potential use in search-and-rescue missions through rubble and flooded spaces. 

🏥 Humanoid robots have successfully performed gallbladder surgeries in pigs for the first time, marking a milestone that researchers say could expand robotic surgery into smaller hospitals, remote locations, and emergency care settings.

🤖 MIT researchers developed SceneSmith, an AI agent system that creates realistic 3D virtual environments where robots can safely train, helping them learn complex tasks in simulation before operating in the real world. 

🏭 Mitsubishi Motors will mass-produce humanoid robots starting in 2027, partnering with University of Tokyo spinout Highlanders to first deploy the robots in its own factories before scaling manufacturing at its Kyoto plant. 

🏗️ DEWALT has commercially launched DALE™, the world's first fleet-capable downward drilling robot, capable of drilling up to 10× faster than traditional methods to accelerate large-scale projects like data center construction.
